Just answer RAW with RAW.
Most games explicitly or implicitly don't constrain their GMs to the RAW. But when someone is asking a RAW question, they are wanting to engage just with the game text and not "what you would rule" - any question on the site that's not tagged RAW is answered with a mix of book rules and judgement calls. If you just answer that to ...
People ask questions because they want answers. If we allow that the people asking the questions are experts in the things that they are asking about unless there's evidence otherwise, the number of situations in which "Rule 0", on its own, is a good answer to a question about the rules of a system is extremely small.
If I ask "What are the rules for ...
One way forward:
old-world-of-darkness goes to world-of-darkness — the way it was all the way back.
new-world-of-darkness-2e goes to chronicles-of-darkness.
new-world-of-darkness stays new-world-of-darkness, since those books won't be rebranded and people will be searching for them under that name. The fact that these books are the historical antecedents ...
I'm going to chime in with my own organisation proposal here, based on what I've learned from the D&D and Fate tags, which have fairly robust tagging.
That might be surprising, since I don't play these games and you've probably never seen me active in their questions. I have lurked though and learned about how your rules are organised, and recently in ...
old-world-of-darkness goes to world-of-darkness — the way it was all the way back. (Jadasc's answer)
We really should make new-world-of-darkness an alias for chronicles-of-darkness. The Onyx Path forums have entirely renamed what was the New World of Darkness to Chronicles of Darkness. They don't yet seem to have a distinction between first edition and ...
Brazen mod request: Turn world-of-darkness into old-world-of-darkness.
Not forever; just during the Retagging. I'd wager more than three quarters of the questions tagged w-o-d are o-w-o-d tag worthy. Retag the ones that aren't, then release the w-o-d tag from synonymy and use it as described above.
It should be noted that the official stance of Onyx Path (and by virtue of being the only mouthpiece I can find for the new White Wolf, presumably White Wolf), that 'New World of Darkness' branding is being retroactively sunset.
A commenter asked...
Minor request when you have a chance, can you clarify the naming conventions on the Chronicles as far as ...
I don't see this being accepted. Splatbooks in WoD have always been things like Clanbook: Brujah—a supplement to the main game book Vampire: the Masquerade. Sometimes the individual supernaturals are called "splats" too, but this isn't a useful distinction to us as—for various reasons—we care most about the game a question is about.
So, we prefer to tag ...
If they are sufficiently distinct that someone who's watching vampire-the-masquerade would not be able to help a question about V20, then they should probably have separate tags. If they're close, then it could go either way and should probably wait on an obvious need.
If they should have separate tags, they should probably be vampire-the-masquerade-20, etc....
Rename [vampire-darkages] to [vampire-the-dark-ages]
There's a space in the book title. There should probably be a space in the tag. This isn't a big deal but it's bugging me.
Also, we're including the 'the' in titles now, so there's that.
Rename wod-20th-anniversary to old-world-of-darkness
It is really splitting hairs.
It is roughly the same rules.
The metaplot is gone but the rules are the same.
The largest differences in that wod-20th has modern items that wern't invented citation needed.
All 7 of the 8 of the questions are tagged with: wod-20th-anniversary and world-of-darkness
6 of 8 ...
Rename and Synonymise nwod to new-world-of-darkness
nwod is currently in use.
new-world-of-darkness fits in better with doppelgreener's taxonomy.
There is no reason they can not live together happily.
(I can't yet propose tag synonyms but someone else can and I can vote. Or a mod can insta-do it)
Or we could not do it.
If you think we should not, please ...
I think this depends heavily on how the question is phrased.
Questions that are purely about the plot belong on Arqade. Questions that try to understand the plot of the game from the perspective of the pencil & paper rulebooks would probably be OK, on the other hand.
For example, "What in-game justification is given for the protagonist's immunity to ...
It doesn't need the Rapidly Changing template message — either the answer is knowable and answers will be submitted, the question will get closed as unclear, or it will just remain unanswered until an answer exists. If later changes to the rules invalidate a particular answer post, then the usual site processes that cope with such things (downvotes, edits, ...
The MES in the tag is meant to represent "Mind's Eye Society," but the most common name for that organization is still "The Camarilla." In fact, at the national meeting a few weeks ago, the Board of Directors said they were in negotiations with the new White Wolf to regain access to that name. I'd hold off for now.
If you want to ask more like the kind of question you asked, you should just go to Arqade or Scifi.
The original version of the question was really not appropriate for our site. It reads like this in essence: “Please explain to me how this thing could've worked that happened in this video game, using the tabletop game rules which the video game only ...
It used to be that world-of-darkness was the umbrella tag for all editions/lines/etc., as well as representing the setting(s) called “The World of Darkness” across editions, as you say. We nailed down the taxonomy of WoD tags in Clean up tagging for "World of Darkness" related questions and implemented it with a call-to-arms in Start retagging the ...
The following merger and rearrangement has been performed:
new-world-of-darkness → chronicles-of-darkness-1e
Synonyms are new-world-of-darkness-1e, storytelling-system, nwod-1e
new-world-of-darkness-2e → chronicles-of-darkness-2e
Synonyms are new-world-of-darkness-2e, nwod-god-machine
The few questions previously tagged chronicles-of-darkness ...
Forgot the LARPers.
We do have questions under minds-eye-theatre, which should go in the hierarchy somewhere. I think this is another mid-level tag. It can pair with new-world-of-darkness (the card-pull system) and old-world-of-darkness (rock-paper-scissors) and any of the extant games. There is a new edition of the RPS system out now, published by By Night ...
Let me stop my endless comment chain and put forward a proposal:
world-of-darkness gets replaced with world-of-darkness-classic, which synonyms to wod, owod and cwod. The wod-20th-anniversary tag should just be burninated and existing questions clarified. We don't have tags for softback, hardback and revised, either.
Replace nwod with world-of-darkness-...
That tagging proposal was written in 2014. World of Darkness tagging was updated again in 2015, making that 2014 tagging schema out of date as a reference.
In the 2014 proposal (which I wrote) the idea was:
world-of-darkness as a whole-of-series tag, which in turn contains
And yes, the ...
Per this suggestion here I've renamed the tag to the-camarilla-minds-eye-society, with larp-mes-camarilla and minds-eye-society as synonyms. This way both names it's well known by get covered. We can revisit this together when we know the outcome of the name re-acquisition effort. Best of luck to them.
As usual if we should change the tag name or for some ...
Blood and Smoke
I've created the Blood and Smoke tag (following the book title, it's exactly that: blood-and-smoke) for the following two questions:
How many are the starting merit dots now?
Does Blood and Smoke invalidate previous Vampire books?
The latter was tagged vampire-the-requiem-2e previously (and untagged and retagged; really it's had a pretty ...
This is now done, as the new tag exists,
the tag wiki can now be edited in place.
Lets write this thing. I am not certain enough to do it. So community wiki.
The current is not great.
Since right now, with the world-of-darkness likely being destroyed then recreates
Proposed new tag wiki for world-of-darkness
Questions relating to the World of ...
